This course will take you beyond basic stone masonry and into the realm of stonework as an art form.
A five-day intensive course where you will be taught about the qualities of natural stone while also learning about the creativity, flexibility and logic that sustains stone sculpture. After exploring the potential of stone through several group projects, the class will construct a culminating project of an arched entryway.
Class discussions will include the mathematical reasoning behind building an arch and the engineering of supports for a stone arch while under construction. While on site, we’ll build sculptural structures like footings as we discuss stone types, wall form and structure.
Interests of class participants, including design decisions, will define the design of our culminating archway.
